Created as a truly one-of-a-kind commission, this Robbins R.1CA transforms Tyler Robbins’ own “Northern Light” tattoo into an intricate visual theme across the instrument. An Italian spruce soundboard is paired with exceptionally rare Fiddleback Tree mahogany, whose dramatic three-dimensional figure gives the back, sides, bevels, and other appointments an unmistakable presence. To reproduce the subtle green gradations of the aurora, Tyler first developed the composition through CAD pre-visualization and produced physical mock-ups before beginning the final work. Because conventional resin alone could not achieve the required color transitions, he created a layered process using carefully cropped photographic elements beneath transparent resin. Light passing through the clear upper layer gives the completed inlays an unusual sense of depth, turning the Northern Lights motif into an integral part of the guitar rather than a conventional decorative pattern. The R.1 is Tyler’s auditorium-class design, combining a comfortable body with the projection and dynamic range of a larger instrument. Its 13-fret neck joint, flowing contours, crisp bass, and clarity across the registers make it a versatile platform for the modern player. In this R.1CA configuration—with cutaway, arm bevel, extraordinary figured mahogany, and completely original artwork—the result is both a highly refined musical instrument and a singular piece of functional art.
