Created as a one-of-a-kind commission, this Robbins R.1CA pairs an Italian spruce soundboard with African blackwood and a visual concept inspired by traditional Korean changho latticework. Tyler Robbins reinterpreted the architectural motif through flamed koa, brass, fine linework, and deep jade-green resin, preserving the identity of the original pattern within his own contemporary design language. At the heart of the design is an octagonal rosette surrounding a removable brass lattice soundhole plug. More than a decorative insert, the plug allows the “window” to be opened and closed, transforming the traditional motif into a functional part of the instrument. Related patterns continue through the back inlay, headstock, fingerboard, custom side markers, and end graft, creating a unified composition across the entire guitar. Arm and rib bevels enhance playing comfort while giving the dark African blackwood body a refined, flowing profile. The instrument is completed with brass Rogers tuners whose engraved details and materials complement the inlay work. The result is not a reproduction of Korean ornament, but a carefully developed collaboration in which traditional lattice geometry, modern resin art, metalwork, and contemporary lutherie form a singular visual identity.
